Many of our high schoolers also play in the All-State Orchestra, and several former Aurora Strings musicians have won the Juneau Symphony Concerto Competition while members of our orchestra.

All Juneau string students taking private lessons on their instrument are invited to apply. Students are appointed to the orchestra at the discretion of our Music Director Mr. Xia.

Ursa Major gathers Juneau string players to play challenging music, make new friends and perform all over town.

Ursa Major rehearses on Friday evenings in the Flats and performs at concerts and events around Juneau.

Students performing in Ursa Major are generally in Suzuki Books 3-5 or equivalent, and in school grades 6-9. Students with experience in Juneau Symphony Prelude Orchestra or school orchestras are also welcome to audition. Our ensembles only meet once per week and move quickly through a lot of repertoire. All students must have a private lesson teacher to support them in learning their parts, and commit to practicing Ursa Major music outside of rehearsals. Apply to join.
